Transport in Hamburg

In the following we describe how to travel in Hamburg and to the conference location in the eastern part of Hamburg (campus of the Helmut-Schmidt-University (HSU), Holstenhofweg 85, 22043 Hamburg). On another page we provide information on how to travel to Hamburg.

Public Transport - HVV

Public transport in Hamburg is organized by HVV (Hamburger Verkehrsverbund), which includes the following means of transport:

  • underground trains (U-Bahn, which admittedly runs underground as well as partly overground),
  • rapid transit trains (S-Bahn),
  • hundreds of HVV busses,
  • certain ferries on the river Elbe.

We will provide HVV tickets to the conference participants for the conference period. The ticket is imprinted in the personal badge. This allows to use HVV transport during the conference period at no further cost (after having fetched the badge at the conference desk, i.e. you need to make the first trip to the campus on your own).

For users of mobile devices, HVV connections can be checked at http://m.hvv.de or by using an app (available for Android and iPhone).

A usual way to reach the conference location by public transport from the city center is to use the U-Bahn U1 (blue line, direction Ohlstedt/Großhansdorf) to the stop U Wandsbek Markt and change there (on bus terminal above ground, Abfahrtsbereich C (departure area C)) to one of the following busses to the bus stop Universität der Bundeswehr (duration of the final bus trip is about 7 minutes):

  • bus no. 10 (direction Horner Rennbahn, bus stop sign reads: <10> AK Wandsbek - Jenfeld Zentrum - Jenfeld (Glatzer Straße)),
  • bus no. 261 (direction Horner Rennbahn, bus stop sign reads: <261> U Horner Rennbahn - U Burgstra├če - U S Berliner Tor),
  • bus no. 263 (bus stop sign reads: <263> direction Jenfeld - Barsbüttel - Willinghusen - Stapelf[eld]. - Reinbeker Str./Großlohe)),
  • (one may also use bus no. 35 (direction Sorenkoppel) to the bus stop Universität der Bundeswehr, yet the respective bus stop is outside the bus terminal at Wandsbek Markt (directly to the south)).

Additionally, from the city center one may also use the direct connection by bus no. 35 to the bus stop Universität der Bundeswehr, or the U-Bahn U2 (red line) to the stop Horner Rennbahn and change there to bus no. 261 (direction Barmbek) to the bus stop Universität der Bundeswehr. For both connections it is useful to check the schedule due to a cycle time of twenty minutes.

From the airport, one may use the rapid transit train (S-Bahn) S1 which links the airport to the city center every ten minutes. To directly reach the conference from the airport, leave S1 at the stop U S Wandsbeker Chaussee (this takes about 16 minutes from the airport) and change, e.g., to bus no. 261 (direction U Horner Rennbahn, bus stop sign reads: <261> U Wandsbek M[arkt]. - U Horner Rennb[ahn]. - U Burgstra├če - U S Berliner Tor) or bus no. 35 (direction Sorenkoppel, bus stop sign reads: <35> U Wandsbek Markt - Jenfeld - Rahlstedt (Ost)) to the bus stop Universität der Bundeswehr.
